Description
Jupiter Medical Center Presentation by Dr. Bhagwandin, on the latest surgical advancements utilizing Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) to treat late stage abdominal cancer.
The American Cancer Society (National Cancer Institute concurs):
- By 2030, colorectal cancer incidence rates will be up 90% in people between ages 20 and 34, and 28% for people between ages 35 and 49. Lack of exercise, diet, obesity, smoking, and alcohol can raise the odds of having colon cancer at all ages, and researchers are looking at all for potential causes.
- About 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed in 2019. More women than men.
- Worldwide, Liver cancer is one of the most common cancers – more than half a million new cases reported each year – considered third leading cause of cancer related death.
- Incidence of Liver and other GI cancers are on the rise in North America due to the obesity epidemic and the increased risk for developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Jupiter Medical Center announces the surgical skills of Dr. Bhagwandin, being the first hospital on the east coast of Florida, to perform Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) to treat late stage abdominal cancer. There are only a handful of surgeons nationally who have the skills to perform this procedure.
HIPEC advantages over standard chemotherapy:
- It is a single treatment done in the operating room, instead of multiple treatments over several weeks
- 90% of the drug stays within the abdominal cavity, decreasing toxic effects on the rest of the body
- It allows for a more intense dose of chemotherapy
He also specializes in the management of advanced peritoneal carcinomatosis through the application of Hyperthermic IntraPeritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) and cytoreductive surgery; a technique that combines surgery with chemotherapy delivered directly into the abdomen.
