he Cleveland Duo & James Umble will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in the Helen K. Persson Recital Hall in Vera Lea Rinker Hall on the campus of Palm Beach Atlantic University,326 Acacia Road, West Palm Beach. The performance is open to the public. The Cleveland Duo, madeup of the husband-wife team of violinist Stephen Warner and violinist and pianist Carolyn Gadiel Warner, has performed with Umble, a classical saxophonist, to the major acclaim of audiences and critics alike since the 1993-94 season. This ensemble has performed throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico and over the airwaves of both National Public Radio and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The Warners are musicians with the Cleveland Orchestra, which will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday atthe Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in downtown West Palm Beach. Umble, professor of saxophoneperformance at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, has performed with the ClevelandOrchestra as a saxophonist in select repertoire. The trio has also performed and lectured at important national and international conferences including the annual Chamber Music America Conferencein New York City, the World Saxophone Congress in both Montreal and in Minneapolis, and the NASA (North American Saxophone Alliance) at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and at the University of Georgia in Athens. Their recent and upcoming concert seasons have, and will have, taken them to California, Arkansas, Kansas, Oregon, North and South Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York City,Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The trio also regularly performs in Canadaand has appeared in concert and in residence in Mexico City. Actively involved in the performance of new music, The Cleveland Duo & James Umble were the recipients of five new works by members ofthe Cleveland Composers’ Guild who sought, by way of competition, to write for the trio. This project culminated in a special concert in May 2008 at Cleveland State University in which all five workswere premiered. Their repertoire contains several such new works as well as other original repertoire for their unusual combination and transcriptions of music by Bach, Handel, Ravel, Piazzolla, Bartok, Adams, Bernstein, Satie and many more, some of which the trio has been granted exclusive performance rights by major publishing houses. Their collaborative CD, Dejeuner sur l’Herbe on the Dana Label, was the recipient of a 1993 Grammy nomination citation in five categories, including best chamber music disc.
