I was taught that the best photographers in the world were also the best printers, but the best printers were not necessarily the best photographers. What this means is that the best photographers were the ones that understood and experimented with all that was possible in the darkroom while being aware of certain limitations. The eye always trumps technique, but an eye without technique produceslittle of the artist's voice. All decisions about a print are best made at the point of capture and all decisions are informed by your understanding of how it all works. The more you understand about the middle (Photoshop), the more informed your decision can be at the beginning (the point of capture), because everything you do is in service of the print and the goal of every print is to be inservice of your voice. The Focus of this workshop is on fine-art digital printing. You will explore the software tools (correcting color casts, adjustment layers, Black and White conversions that replicate the look of silver prints), color management custom profile generation and workflow considerations that you need to use and make to create prints that will translate your artistic voice in tosomething people can see spoken in your printed images. You will use Epson inkjet printers with color and black/gray ink combinations and you will make prints on coated and fine art rag papers. By the end of the week, you will have mastered all the key techniques to make the best print.
