Oxbridge Academy Senior Wins The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
“Students of the Year” Fundraising Campaign

Alyssa Goldman of Boynton Beach Raised More Than $25,000 for the Cause in Honor of Her Late Grandfather

West Palm Beach, FL – Oxbridge Academy senior Alyssa Goldman of Boynton Beach was named the winner of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) inaugural Students of the Year Campaign for the Palm Beach Area Chapter. Over a 7-week period, Goldman raised $25,017 for LLS, which will be used to fund lifesaving blood cancer research and also support local patients and their families in critical need for financial aid.

Goldman, along with 10 finalists, was recognized at the event’s closing ceremony on March 9th where Goldman received a Volunteerism Award and a $2,500 scholarship. The program challenges students in Palm Beach County to raise funds in honor of local heroes who are currently battling or in remission from a blood cancer.

Goldman campaigned in honor of her late grandfather, whom she calls her best friend, who died six years ago from Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a disorder in which the body’s bone marrow does not produce enough healthy blood cells, often referred to as “bone marrow failure disorder.” After four years of treatments, operations and suffering, Goldman’s grandfather passed away in 2011 because there was no stem cell or bone marrow found to match that could have potentially saved his life.

“Winning the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Student of the Year Campaign, was so meaningful to me. Not only was I able to honor my grandfather but more importantly, I was able to raise funds to help those, both current and future, victims suffering from Cancer,” said Goldman. “There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that what I have done over the last 7 weeks will truly make a difference and benefit the lives of many to come.”

“We could not be more proud of this group of candidates. They successfully raised over $104,000 during the campaign, and have set the bar high for future campaigns,” said Pam Payne, Executive Director for LLS of the Palm Beach Area Chapter.

Candidates are selected through a rigorous application process including a questionnaire and brief essay. The LLS selection committee is responsible for choosing the finalists for the campaign.

All proceeds from the Students of the Year campaign will benefit LLS’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. While this event will raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer research, it will also help support our local patients and their families by providing critically needed financial aid.
